Lab news

Two new graduate students recruited, one exchange graduate student accepted (post on Aug. 26, 2010)
The Sperm Laboratory will have two new graduate students in September of 2010. Ms Cong-Cong Hou came from Yancheng Teachers College, Jiangsu Province, and Mr. Hai-Tao Mao came from Zhejiang University. Ms Hou's major is Developmental Biology, and Mr. Mao's major is Cell Biology. Ms Xiao-Xin Ma, a graduate student from Ningbo University was accepted as an exchange graduate student in this laboratory. She entered the Sperm Laboratory in August 2010.

Group meeting: Data report

Ms. Xue-Yu Zhang and Mr. Hai-Tao Mao reported their data at the group meeting on May 14, 2010. Ms. Zhang's data are about the function of KIFC1 during nuclear morphogenesis, and Mr. Mao's data are about prohibitin gene cloning in Octopus.   Journal club language: English. Time: 18:30-20:30. Mr. Chao Xing, an undergraduate student from Ningbo University delivered crab samples from Ningbo City to the Sperm Laboratory on May 8, 2010. Our laboratory is investigating the kinesin motors during spermatogenesis of this crab, Charybdis japonica (A. Milne-Edwards). Click here to see two young ladies who are working on this species.

Miss Yun-Shu Fan and Miss Yan-Ting Wang gave presentations respectively at our journal club tonight. 1. We held a regular journal club and seminar today. Journal club: The speaker is Mr. Da-Hui Wang. Topic: The role of  p53 during spermatogenesis. This presentation was based on basic knowledge of p53 and a paper published on Cell Death and Differentiation, 1998, 5: 669-677. The paper title is "The role of the tumor suppressor p53 in spermatogenesis". Seminar: The speaker is Ms. Xiao SUN. Title: "Myosins and kinesins involved in Spermatogenesis". Group meeting  (post on April 26, 2010)
A group meeting was held on April 23, 2010. Dr. Wan-Xi Yang was the presider and the speaker. He emphasized the importance of the English journal club on every Friday, and he asked every student to do experiment very seriously, and to analyze data very  carefully. Every student has their own assignment in this laboratory after several months training.

Scientific writing and research training

All the current members of the Sperm Laboratory attended a Writing Workshop organized by Zhejiang Zoological Society from April 16-18, 2010. Prof. Ronald W. Dudek, professor at the Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University, USA, gave two important lectures on scientific writing and science ethics. This workshop was held in Wenzhou University. The following members attended this workshop: Da-Hui Wang, Xiao Sun, Wei Wang, Ran Dang, Huan Mao,  Na Xu, Cong-Cong Hou, Hai-Tao Mao, Tian-Ting Zhang, Xue-Yu Zhang, Qi Wang, Liang Xiang, Yun-Shu Fan, Yan-Ting Wang, Chun Zhang.

Group meeting on March 5, 2010 (post on March 11, 2010)
The Sperm Laboratory's first group meeting was held on March 5, 2010. Mr. Mao Hai-Tao was accepted as a formal member at the meeting. Dr. Wan-Xi Yang encouraged all the group members  to do experiments carefully, to explore the scientific facts which happen behind spermatogenesis.

Happy Tiger Year and the Saint Valentine's Day !!! (post on Feb. 14, 2010)
Today is our Chinese New Year's day and the Saint Valentine's Day, the Sperm Laboratory wishes all of you who are/were visiting our lab's homepage and all those who care about us have a Happy Chinese New Year and an excellent Valentine's Day! Hope all of you and all of our members have a great future!


The New Year's Party and Karaoke Party held (post on Jan. 24, 2010)
The Sperm Laboratory held the New Year's Party on Jan. 24, 2010. We usually gather together to celebrate our Chinese Traditional New Year before the Spring Festival and the Winter Holiday begin. We held our second Karaoke Party at Kadi KTV House in the afternoon, Jan. 24, 2010. Our fist Karaoke Party was held at Yin Le Di KTV House on November 24, 2007.

Group meeting on Jan. 22, 2010 (post on Jan. 24, 2010)

The Sperm Laboratory held a group meeting on Jan. 22, 2010, Friday. Dr. Wan-Xi Yang reviewed the progress of our lab in the year of 2009. According to Dr. Yang's summary, we cloned three genes in three different species, including kifc1 and myosin-Va genes in Chinese mitten crab, kif3a and kifc1 genes in Octopus tankahkeei, and kifc1 gene in Cynops orientalis; we have set up our own FISH analyzing platform in 2009; five research papers were published in the past year. Dr. Yang called that all the members need to study and work harder in the year of 2010.

Ms. Tian-Ting Zhang gave a presentation at our journal club on Jan. 15, 2010. Her talk was based on a paper which was published on Developmental Dynamics (2008, 237:1348–1358). The title of the paper is "Bipolar, Anastral Spindle Development in Artificially Activated Sea Urchin Eggs", the authors included John H. Henson, Christopher A. Fried, Mary K. McClellan, Jason Ader, Jessica E. Davis,

Dr. Wan-Xi Yang visited Sangmyung University

Officially invited by Sangmyung University, Korea, Dr. Wan-Xi Yang visited this Korean university from January 7  until January 12, 2010. He gave a presentation at the seminar organized by Department of Green Life Science, College of Natural Sciences, Sangmyung Univerity. The title of his seminar is "The molecular mechanism of the C-terminal kinesin motor KIFC1 during acrosomal biogenesis in Chinese mitten crab and the acrosomal reaction induced by the calcium ionophore A23187 in octopus". The Sperm Laboratory gathered together on Dec. 23, 2009. Ms. Xiao SUN and Mr. Wei WANG gave two talks at the journal club. (1)Ms. Xiao SUN's presentation was based on a latest paper from Prof. Jun Xia's Laboratory. The paper, titled "PICK1 deficiency causes male infertility in mice by disrupting acrosome formation." was published on The Journal of Clinical Investigation (Volume 119 Number 4 April 2009, view this paper at http://www.jci.org). The authors of this paper are: Nan Xiao, Chuen Kam, Chong Shen, Wenying Jin, Junqi Wang, Kwong Man Lee, Liwen Jiang, and Jun Xia (Correspondence author). (2) Mr. Wei WANG's talk was about UNC83. His talk was based on a paper from Prof. Daniel A. Starr's lab. The title is "UNC-83 is a nuclear-specific cargo adaptor for kinesin-1-mediated nuclear migration.", which was published on Development, 2009, 136: 2725-2733. doi:10.1242/dev.038596.
